Gardening app review

In today’s post, I will share the past week’s activities and begin reviewing some gardening apps in search of a digital gardening journal to help manage my garden. Beginning with five apps, I whittle them down to two.

The first of the treated pine beds!

Today, I will talk about making garden beds on a budget and provide instructions on building a basic sleeper garden bed. I explain why I chose treated pine sleepers over untreated timber, and I explain the toxic treatment some wood goes through and how you can avoid it.

Compost 101

G’day, welcome back to the Vandemonian homesteader! This week, I’ve been busy setting up a new compost heap. I’ll show you how to make a simple chicken wire composter, and I will let you know what to put in it so you can make fantastic compost for your garden. Cheers!

Upcycling timber pallets

Welcome back to the Vandemonian Homesteader. It's autumn in Hobart, and today, I upcycle a wooden pallet into a planter box for a new herb garden. I also share tips on finding free or cheap wood for your projects at home.

Starting my urban homestead

Today, I share my plan for starting my urban homestead and what I hope to achieve with it. I also share some key factors that need consideration when getting your urban homestead off the ground.

Strawberries at home Part 3

In the final part of my strawberry trilogy, I demonstrate how you can turn an old PVC pipe into a magnificent strawberry tower that allows you to make the most of the limited space in your garden while maximising your strawberry yield! I also share my plans and goals for the rest of 2024.

Strawberries at home Part 2

In this second part of the Strawberry trilogy, I discuss two methods to propagate strawberries at home: growing from cuttings and from seeds. I detail the process of taking cuttings from runners and planting them, as well as sowing seeds in trays for indoor cultivation. Additionally, I talk about my upcoming post next week where I plan to construct a strawberry tower in the final part of the series, emphasizing the joy of growing one's own produce.
